The nisab is the value of 612.36 g of silver or 87.48 g of gold. Many scholars recommend the silver value because it is lower and so more people pay. Check today's price with a local jeweller or your masjid.

What is zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory payment from a Muslim’s surplus wealth to people in need, and it purifies the wealth that remains.

Who has to pay zakat?

An adult, sane Muslim who owns wealth above the nisab for a full lunar year (called the hawl) must pay zakat on that wealth.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due. It is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because silver is cheaper, the silver nisab is lower, and many scholars recommend using it so that more people pay and more people in need benefit. The value changes with the market, so check the current price when you calculate.

Which assets count for zakat?

  • Cash at home and money in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver, including jewellery (scholars differ on jewellery worn regularly)
  • Shares, funds and other investments
  • Business stock and goods held for sale
  • Money owed to you that you expect to be repaid

Your home, car, furniture and personal belongings do not count. Debts that are due now can be deducted.

Who can receive zakat?

The Quran (Surah at-Tawbah, 9:60) names eight groups: the poor, the needy, those who administer zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, people in bondage, people in debt, those striving in the cause of Allah, and stranded travellers.

How does Asraa handle your zakat?

Zakat given to Asraa Hope Foundation is kept in a separate fund from other donations and is given only to people who are eligible to receive it. Tell us if you would like it spent on a particular programme.
