About us
Who runs Asraa Hope Foundation, how it is regulated in Pakistan as a Section 42 company, and its plans to register in the United Kingdom and United States.
What is Asraa Hope Foundation?
Asraa Hope Foundation is a not-for-profit company registered in Pakistan under Section 42 of the Companies Act, 2017 and licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). It is based in Karachi and funds education, healthcare, food support, clean water, community and masjid support, and emergency relief for families in need across Pakistan.
Our tagline is “helping people”, and it describes the work plainly: we find families who need help, check what they need, and pay for it directly wherever we can.
Our mission
To help people in Pakistan meet their basic needs for education, health, food and safety, in a way that protects their dignity and is fully accountable to the people who give.
What we believe
- Dignity. People who receive help are treated with respect and their privacy is protected. We do not publish photographs of anyone without their consent.
- Need first. Help is given on the basis of need, assessed case by case.
- Accountability. Donors can see how money is spent, and anyone can raise a concern with us.
- Faith and service. Our work is inspired by the Islamic duty to care for others, and we follow Islamic rules in how zakat is collected and spent.
How is Asraa regulated?
Section 42 of the Companies Act, 2017 allows the SECP to license a company formed for charitable or other not-for-profit purposes. A Section 42 licence comes with conditions: the company must apply all its income to its stated objects, it cannot pay dividends to its members, and it must keep proper books, have its accounts audited and file returns with the SECP. Directors are personally responsible for complying with these rules.
This structure was chosen because it gives donors the same legal protections and public filings as any registered company, with SECP oversight on top.
Who runs Asraa?
Asraa is governed by a board of directors who are responsible for its strategy, finances and compliance. Day-to-day work is carried out by staff and volunteers in Pakistan.
Where do we work?
Our head office is in Karachi, Sindh. Our programmes reach families in Pakistan, both in cities and in rural areas where public services are hardest to reach.
Registration in the United Kingdom and United States
Many of our supporters live in the UK and the USA. We are preparing to register as a charity in England and Wales and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States, so that donors there can give with the tax benefits their country allows (Gift Aid in the UK, a tax deduction in the US). Until those registrations are granted, gifts from the UK and US are received by Asraa Hope Foundation in Pakistan. We will update this page and the donation panel as soon as each registration is complete.
